Gaffers Tape

Gaffers Tape, also known as “stage tape” or “spike tape” is used in visual productions. It can be used in live theater, or in video productions studios.

The main purpose is to cover cables or wires, running along, or even on the stage. It is designed not to reflect light so that the audience, whether live, or at home watching TV cannot see the cables, or items held down and covered. The other important feature of gaffers tape, and what makes it different from duct tape, is that it should removed cleanly, without leaving an adhesive residue. This is the part that sets cheap tape, from high quality tape such as 3M 6910 Gaffers Tape.

Another stage use for gaffers tape, is its function as spike tape. This is when producers use the tape the mark the stage for actors, or for where new stage scene changes are marked.

When first handled, it will seem very similar to duct tape. The high amount of tack/quick stick functionality, the strength of its backing, and the ability to tear it off a roll, make it appear very similar to duct tape. Gaffers tape is much expensive, but this is because of features mentioned, non-reflective, and the clean removal. Trying to save money going to duct tape, will cause you many hours cleaning adhesive off or cords, or a lower production quality.
