Rubber vs Acrylic Adhesives

One of those things tape sellers are always wishing for was consumers who understood the basics of adhesives.  (or at least the basics we want you to know!)

Very simply, nearly every adhesive basic, and even advanced consumers are going to use will be either rubber based, or acrylic based.

Rubber adhesive

  • sticks quickly and reaches full strength quickly.
  • Generally the the operating temperature range is much narrower than acrylic.
  • Should be used only indoors,
  • Avoid using on plastics
  • in VELCRO(R) products the 15 adhesive or “sticky back” products often seen in stores
  • Dual Lock:  SJ3540, SJ3541, SJ3542

Acrylic adhesive

  • Slower to reach a full bond, greater bond when it is does get to full bind
  • Typically lasts much longer than rubber adhesives because it deals with moisture and heat better
  • Typically more expensive
  • VELCRO(R) it is the 72 Adhesive
  • Dual Lock, SJ3550, SJ3551, S3552, SJ3560, SJ3561, SJ3562, SJ4570, SJ4575, SJ4580

There are exceptions to these rules.  3M’s 360 adhesive breaks a lot of these rules (though you have to pay for it!)  but this gives you a frame of reference.
